BEST SECURITY MEASURES FOR PRIVATE RESIDENCE.

HOME INTRUSION

Cases of home intrusion and burglary in a residence environment have increased due to the prevailing economic hardship and fallen moral standards. There is therefore a need of having good security at home and cannot be over emphasized as it gives the house owner peace of mind.

However, it has been noted that in residential areas with security personnel, there is still incidences of crime and burglary, this is because there is little or no security awareness of the area by the security persons and becomes necessary to have individual house supervision. Although the cost of hiring security operatives to fill such a gap may sometimes be expensive to the house owners and an alternative of having electronic devices deployed in the area becomes very desirable in such a situation.

It has also become more popular for people to be able to remotely control their homes and appliances when they are not around, and it therefore becomes a need to automate the home so that the authorized owner can take advantage of technology advancement. The availability of this kind of home systems make safety and security breaches to be detected easily, and notification sent to the appropriate authority for necessary action to be carried out.

In addition, the system enables home owners to team up with security authority in ensuring the safety of the area since the notification is sent to the house owner as well as the neighboring community, therefore the idea of community policing is inherent in the system. As observed the automated system is especially useful in developing countries where community policing has not been implemented due to fear of some security trends.

Intrusion Detection

In order to detect intrusion, an infrared transceiver is mounted at the entrance or doors to detect opening of the doors as it detects any opening or closing of doors by measuring the change in resistance. The keypad is used by authorized personnel to input password upon entry into the house to prevent the alarm from false triggering.

 Smoke Detection

The smoke sensor used in the implementation of the system is a MQ-2 sensor. This sensor has the ability to detect smoke as well as combustible gas, which made it functional for the purpose of monitoring safety in the house.

RELATED WORKS IN SECURE SMART HOME SYSTEMS

A movable intrusion detection system that utilizes vibration and magnetic sensors, which sends SMS to home owner was presented

in Elfasakhany et al. (2011). However, the system is useful only when direct attack is made on the door or window.

A flexible intrusion detection system that utilizes magnetic sensors and vibrations that sends SMS to home owners was identified in Elfasakhany et al. (2011). However, the system is only useful when direct attack is made on the window or door. In 2015 Parab and Joglekar implemented detection systems for home security. These sent SMS to home owners in the event of intrusion.

Although they are inexpensive, they are not very sufficient for modern home needs. Shawki et al. in 2015, proposed a combination of home automation and home security system which has provision to control some devices via GSM, while the security aspect only deals with Passive Infra-Red (PIR) based intrusion detection and designed smoke detector circuit.

An intrusion detection system based on pressure sensor, which sends SMS to the house owner was presented in 2015. It allows a manual rest of the system through keypad and password from a Bluetooth connected mobile phone, as so door control is provided by servo motor controlled magnetic switch. The system carries out motion detection through potential difference of door lock metal plates, temperature sensing and flame sensing, the information is transmitted to the house owner via SMS.

The built prototype home security system can detect door openings and notify the homeowner via email, SMS and phone calls of break in detection.  Experiments in a residential home show that the accelerometer-based detection can detect door open events with accuracy higher than 98%, and magnetometer-based detection has 100% accuracy. By using the magnetometer method to automate the training phase of a neural network, the sound-based detection of door openings has an accuracy of 90% across multiple doors. The limitations of the design are that the cost of smart phones is still very high in developing countries and the security is limited to break-ins.

 CONCLUSION

The GSM based residential area security network and remote home security system has been made and tested using mobile phone and other devices. Additional features such as child safety, medical emergencies, security cameras and video surveillance can be incorporated into the system. The result of this system is a unified, fast and efficient service which ensures shorter time to alert the house owner, security providers and the neighbor’s by sending information through devices and trigger alarms.
